I'm grateful this legislation is alive and well in Massachusetts. So much misunderstanding still hangs over Right to Repair, I wonder if we understand how critical this really is to our businesses. As a shop owner in the middle of a rough economic climate, I know how easy it is to focus only on my daily issues and ignore politics, especially since car makers at the moment do seem pleasantly disposed to make selected repair info available to their aftermarket competitors. This seemingly generous voluntary effort has swayed some credible industry representatives into believing that the Right to Repair legislation isn't really needed after all. But taking off our rose colored glasses for a moment, we can look ahead and visualize a very real scenario where dealers and independents compete for the same customers, and in this scenario, Right to Repair didn't get the votes so there is no law that requires the sharing of repair info, just a mutual agreement among the car makers to do so, and on their terms. Agreements and contracts are made and broken every day, based on interpretation of the fine print provisions. But a state or federal law is quite different because it can be enforced. If car makers really are committed to sharing repair information that is complete and at a fair price, why fight making it a requirement? That is, if they intend to do it anyway.
